Leasing Experience: xAPI-Enabled Scenario-based eLearning

Audience: Leasing consultants and property managers

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Graphic Design, xAPI & JavaScript Implementation

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Visual Studio Code, MindMeister.

Client: Modern Urban Leasing (a fictitious client for this concept project.)

Problem and Solution

Problem: Leasing consultants and property managers often struggle with effectively managing their morning routines, welcoming potential tenants, conducting tours, and addressing prospective tenant concerns. This results in missed opportunities, decreased tenant satisfaction, and lower occupancy rates.

Solution: A scenario-based eLearning experience designed to help leasing consultants and property managers practice and improve their decision-making skills in real-life leasing situations. The training incorporates xAPI to track learner behaviors and JavaScript to include a downloadable PDF certificate of completion with the learner's name and date.

Process

1. Assessing Pain Points: The biggest pain points were identified through consultation with an experienced leasing professional who served as the Subject Matter Expert (SME). Specific steps leasing consultants and property managers should take during their interactions with prospective tenants were outlined.

2. Action Map: An action map was developed with the SME to define the overall goal. Key actions were prioritized to create a successful leasing experience.

3. Text-based Storyboard: A text-based storyboard was created to outline the scenario, choices, and consequences. Each decision point provided learners with options to choose the correct action or face realistic consequences.

4. Visual Mockups: Using Canva and Adobe Illustrator, visual mockups were created for the scenario. The client's brand colors, typefaces, and visual assets were incorporated into the design.

5. Interactive Prototype: An interactive prototype was developed in Articulate Storyline 360. This prototype included the opening screen, an introduction to the scenario, and the first set of questions with feedback.

6. Full Development: The project was fully developed in Articulate Storyline 360 with the addition of xAPI and JavaScript. Custom visuals were created using Adobe Illustrator to enhance the learner's experience.

7. xAPI and JavaScript Implementation: Custom xAPI statements were added to track learner behavior, including correct and incorrect choices, mentor utilization, and completion. JavaScript was used to generate a downloadable PDF certificate of completion

Features

Custom Visuals: Immersive visuals created to simulate a leasing office environment. Full-slide scenes were designed to enhance the storytelling aspect of the scenario.

Visual Paths: Animated visual paths guide learners through the scenario, reinforcing correct choices and showing the consequences of incorrect ones.

Mentor Support: A mentor character named Giovanni is available to assist learners throughout the scenario, providing guidance and support as needed.

Choice Feedback: Detailed feedback is provided for each choice, explaining why an action was correct or incorrect and offering an opportunity to try again.

Reflection

Visuals: Creating custom visuals that align with the client's branding was a key aspect of the project. This ensured a cohesive and engaging learning experience.

Articulate Storyline 360: Manipulating timelines, conditions, cue points, and variables in Storyline 360 allowed for complex interactions and animations within the scenario.

Code: Implementing xAPI and JavaScript expanded the capability of the eLearning experience, allowing for detailed tracking and customized feedback.

User Experience (UX): Focusing on UX ensured that the learning experience was intuitive and engaging for the learners, leading to better retention and application of the training content.
